The Camera Debate

I need help guys. Help me decide if it is a good idea to purchase a fancy camera. (Like a Canon Rebel) At first I was dead set on it because I wanted to take some good pics of the baby that weren't fuzzy and full of red eyes. Now I'm second guessing my photography abilities and am thinking that these cameras are more for people that are really interested in photography.

I know a lot of you guys have them because I see some awesome pictures on your blogs. Are they more trouble than they are worth? (For the amateur) How long did it take you to take some halfway decent pictures with these things if you didn't have any previous photography experience? Other than the large size, are they reasonably simple and easy to use once you get the hang of it?

If I get one, it would be soon so I have plenty of time to mess around with it before the baby arrives. So what do you think? Oh-- And if you have a recommendation of a specific camera or camera store I would love to hear it.

Woops--one more thing. Of those of you that use them on a regular basis and post the pics on your blogs, how much photo editing do you do? Do the straight out of camera shots look pretty great or do you do a lot of photoshopping? I know Photoshop, (I was a graphic designer for goodness sakes. Hopefully I haven't forgotten everything during my extended "vacation.") but time wise, I'm going to assume that I'm not going to want to take a ton of time to edit each photo.

Thanks for your help!!

I am dead set on getting one before we have kids, too. I know that a lot of the local shops offer beginner's courses that you could take to get acquainted with the camera before the baby comes. Good luck deciding!

We have a Canon Rebel XSI (or is it SXI?!) and LOVE IT! I don't have any photography experience and the pictures are instantly better when you pick up one of these!!!

Even at an amateur level using only the automatic function, your photos will be 100 times better!

Though the fun is learning how to use it manually.

I say go for it! I don't do much editing for day to day shots, but of course if you have knowledge of PhotoShop you are ahead of the game. Often time I just use the iphoto software on my Mac instead of Photoshop.

I have a Pentax 200D and I love it. At the time I found the best deal on www.bhphotovideo.com.

Good luck!

Ditto PP on the camera immediately creating better pictures. The day I got our Canon I was mesmerized by how amazing everything looked when I was taking random pictures in the kitchen. I haven't used it much on a regular basis yet, but I'm taking a 2-hour "how to" class at Creve Coeur Camera next week to get better at the basics. I am 100% an amateur and don't plan on doing all kinds of fancy editing to my pictures. I just wanted higher quality photos right out of the camera to document every single roll and giggle of our little one :)

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Get it.

I have the Canon Rebel XS. I was able to take better pictures immediately, just using the auto mode. I later took a class through the community college and now use my camera in full manual mode, so the pictures are even better. But seriously, the auto mode rocks too.

As far as pictures SOOC, they are great. I do edit a lot of my pictures (which usually is just me boosting the color) but almost every picture would be just fine with zero editing.

I have the same camera as Kristal, and I'm in LOVE with it. It does a kick ass job in manual mode alone.

I do edit quite a few of my photos, but I'm anal like that. :-)

You would NOT regret this purchase!!!

Wow! Thanks guys. Sounds like you guys have some great reviews. I didn't even realize that camera stores offered "classes."

I might make a separate post since I don't know who comes back to read comments, but if you do-- Did you guys buy your cameras in stores or have better luck online?

Thanks again everyone!
